A checkout checklist before Black Friday or any big sale
A big sale concentrates a month of orders into a few days. It is also the week when stores install new promo plugins, change prices in bulk and add tracking scripts. That combination is where most sale-day checkout failures come from.

One week before
Finish every code and plugin change and freeze them. Anything that is not ready by now waits until after the sale. Turn off automatic plugin updates for the sale period.
Set up the promotions — cart price rules, coupons, discounted prices — in advance, scheduled to start at the right time, and test each one on staging with a real checkout: add to cart, apply the coupon, check the total.
The day before
Walk through a full checkout on production, on a phone, as a guest, with every payment method you offer. Check that promo banners and popups do not cover the checkout buttons on small screens.
Check stock on your most promoted products and confirm the product you use for testing is still purchasable. Confirm your payment provider has no scheduled maintenance, and that your shipping carriers’ rates still come back.
During the sale
Increase the check frequency so a failure is found in minutes, not after the evening peak. Make sure alerts go to someone who is actually on call that weekend, on a channel they will see — not a shared inbox.
Keep a short list of who can roll back what: the developer for code, the person with admin access for settings, the contact at the payment provider. The middle of a sale is not the time to find out who has the password. Related: hosting limits under load and testing coupons before a promotion.
Check your own store now, free: the WooCommerce checkout checker or the Magento checkout test walks the checkout in a real browser and shows the step where it stops.
Common questions
When should I freeze changes before Black Friday?
At least a week before: no plugin, theme or module updates unless they fix a real problem.
What should I test the day before a sale?
A full purchase with every payment and shipping method, on mobile and desktop, with the sale coupons and prices active.
What should I watch during the sale?
Order rate against the expected level, failed payments, server load and a checkout check every few minutes.
