When OpenSearch goes down, Magento stops selling
It is easy to think of OpenSearch as “the search box”. In Magento 2.4 it is more than that: category pages and product listings are served from it too. When it fails, customers cannot find products, and a checkout nobody can reach is a checkout that is down.

Why Magento depends on it
Magento 2.4 requires a search engine — OpenSearch, or Elasticsearch on older versions — for catalog search and layered navigation. When it is unreachable, category and search pages throw errors or come back empty, while the homepage and CMS pages look fine.
The common causes are dull: disk full, the service out of memory, a version bumped during an upgrade without matching Magento’s requirements, or an index that was never rebuilt.
How it reaches the checkout
Product pages reached directly may still work, so a check that only opens one product URL can stay green. Real customers usually arrive through categories and search, and those are the pages that break.
Stale indexes cause a quieter version: products that are out of stock or disabled still appear, and fail at add to cart. That is the same family of problems as stalled cron and indexers.
What to watch
Monitor the search service itself — health, disk, heap — and alert before it fills up. Check that indexers are valid and that catalog pages return products, not just a 200.
Include discovery in your checkout check: reach the product the way a customer would, then buy it. If the path from category to cart breaks, you want the alert to say so.
Check your own store now with the free Magento checkout test: it walks the checkout in a real browser, Luma or Hyvä, and shows the step where it stops.
Common questions
Does Magento need OpenSearch?
Yes. Magento 2.4 requires OpenSearch or Elasticsearch for catalog search and category listings.
What happens when OpenSearch is down?
Category and search pages fail or show nothing, so customers cannot find products to buy; the admin shows search engine connection errors.
How do I monitor OpenSearch for Magento?
Watch the cluster health and disk use, and check a category page and a search from outside; a full-disk node turns indexes read-only.
