Upgrading Magento 2.4 without breaking checkout
A Magento upgrade is rarely just Magento. It usually drags a new PHP version, a new search engine version and a round of third-party module updates along with it. The checkout is where all of that meets, so it is where upgrade regressions show up first.

What actually changes
Read the release notes and the official upgrade guide for the target version: supported PHP, database and OpenSearch versions often move, and removed or changed APIs are listed there. Make an inventory of every third-party module and check each vendor’s compatibility statement.
Payment, shipping and one-step checkout modules deserve the most attention. They override checkout JavaScript and templates, and a module that was fine on the old version can fail quietly on the new one — the classic cause behind a checkout that breaks after a deploy.
Test the purchase, not the pages
On staging, after `setup:upgrade`, compilation and static content deploy, walk a full purchase as a guest and as a logged-in customer: add to cart, apply a coupon, pick every shipping method, reach each payment method. Check the totals, not just that pages load.
Watch the browser console on the checkout. A missing or renamed RequireJS module or a mixin that no longer applies shows up as a console error long before it shows up as a support ticket.
Release day and the week after
Deploy at a quiet hour, keep the previous release ready to switch back to, and clear caches as part of the release — a stale cache after an upgrade is a problem of its own, covered in full page cache and checkout.
Upgrades also change cron jobs, indexers and queue consumers. Keep an eye on them for a few days, together with a scheduled checkout check, so a regression that only appears under real traffic is found in minutes. Related: OpenSearch outages and headless GraphQL checkouts.
