Third-party scripts on the checkout: every tag is a dependency
Most stores load a dozen scripts they did not write: analytics, ads, chat, reviews, heatmaps, consent banners. Each one is code from another company, running on your checkout, changing whenever that company decides.

How a tag breaks checkout
A script that throws an error can stop the scripts after it from running — and the payment widget is often one of them. A slow tag can delay the page until the customer gives up. A consent banner can sit on top of the “Place order” button on a small screen.
Because these scripts are loaded from someone else’s servers, they change without a deploy on your side. The store worked yesterday, nobody touched it, and today the checkout is broken.
Keep the checkout lean
Ask of each tag: does it need to run on checkout? Chat, heatmaps, recommendation widgets and most marketing pixels do not. Load them on the rest of the site and leave them off the pages where people pay.
For what must stay — analytics, the payment provider, fraud checks — load it as the vendor documents, keep your Content Security Policy up to date with their domains, and remove old tags nobody remembers adding.
Catch it from outside
A monitor that only fetches the HTML never runs these scripts, so it never sees them fail. Only a real browser walking through checkout loads what a customer loads and hits the same errors.
When a check fails, the browser console is the evidence: a blocked script, an undefined object, a request that timed out. Keep it with the alert so the fix starts from the actual error, not a guess. Related: Magecart skimming and PCI DSS 4.0 and payment page scripts.
Check your own store now, free: the WooCommerce checkout checker or the Magento checkout test walks the checkout in a real browser and shows the step where it stops.
Common questions
Can a tracking script break checkout?
Yes. A script that throws an error, loads slowly or overlays the page can stop the checkout script or cover the place order button.
Which scripts belong on the checkout?
Only payment, fraud and the analytics you need for conversion; load chat and marketing tags elsewhere.
How do I find a script that breaks checkout?
Block third-party scripts one by one in the browser’s developer tools and retry the checkout.
