Can Uptime Kuma watch your checkout? What it covers, and where it stops

Uptime Kuma is one of the most popular self-hosted monitoring tools, and for good reason: it is free, open source and watches dozens of check types from your own server. The question for a store owner is narrower: does it tell you that customers can still buy?

What Uptime Kuma does well

As published in its documentation and repository (checked 2026-10-19), Uptime Kuma monitors HTTP(s), keywords on a page, ping, DNS, ports, Docker containers and more, with status pages and notifications to dozens of services. It is self-hosted, so it runs on a box you control, and there is no per-check fee. For knowing that a host, a domain or a service answers, it is excellent value.

Real-browser monitoring is where the community keeps pushing: an official plugin adds page checks in Chrome and Firefox, and an open feature request asks for running Playwright tests inside Kuma. As of the checked date, a browser monitor loads a page; it does not walk a purchase.

Where the checks stop for a store

A checkout is a journey: find a product, add it to the cart, fill in the address, be offered shipping, reach payment. A page-level check verifies the first page and nothing after it. In our own checkout failure data, 77% of recorded incidents happened while the homepage answered normally — a form that would not submit, a session lost between steps, a price that changed in the cart.

The longer argument is in why uptime monitoring misses broken checkouts. The short version: an uptime monitor answers "is the site up", and most checkout failures happen while the answer is yes.

What watching a checkout takes

A real browser has to complete the purchase path: pick a real product, add it to the cart, fill checkout, choose shipping and payment and, on plans with test orders, place a real order, confirm it in the store admin and cancel it. When it fails, the alert should name the step and the likely cause, and attach a screenshot and a network log — evidence, not a red dot.

MageSentinel does exactly that, for Magento 2 (Luma, Hyvä and one-step checkouts) and WooCommerce, with nothing to install on the store. Uptime Kuma and a checkout monitor are not rivals: Kuma for your infrastructure, a purchase-path monitor for the revenue.

Keeping both, and what it costs

Uptime Kuma is free software; you pay with the server it runs on and the time to maintain it. MageSentinel plans are counted in stores, not checks: Solo €7.90 a month for one store, Starter €39 for five, Agency €149 for twenty, with checks every 30 minutes (every 15 on Agency, every 5 on Scale) and a 14-day free trial without a card.

Common questions

Can Uptime Kuma test my checkout?

No. Its checks confirm that pages and services answer; a community plugin adds single-page browser checks, but no purchase journey. Uptime Kuma cannot add a product, fill a checkout or place an order.

Is Uptime Kuma free?

The software is free and open source. You self-host it, so the real cost is the server it runs on and your maintenance time.

Do I need checkout monitoring if I already run Uptime Kuma?

If checkout revenue matters, yes. Most checkout failures happen while every uptime check stays green, so uptime alone reports a healthy store while customers cannot buy.
