What UNKNOWN means
A monitor that guesses is a monitor you have to double-check. MageSentinel keeps a third answer — UNKNOWN — for the runs where it genuinely cannot tell.

When a run is UNKNOWN
Some conditions mean MageSentinel never reached the checkout at all: a Cloudflare interstitial, a WAF challenge page, a maintenance page, a storefront that turns out not to be Magento, or a checkout that could not be evaluated conclusively. In every one of these the honest result is "we could not check", so the run is marked UNKNOWN.
An UNKNOWN run is not a failure and is not a pass. It is recorded with its evidence so you can see why the check could not complete.
UNKNOWN never pages
Alerts fire on state changes between PASS and FAIL. An UNKNOWN run never triggers an alert, because "we hit a bot challenge" is not a checkout outage and waking someone for it is exactly the crying-wolf failure mode that makes teams mute a monitor.
If UNKNOWN runs persist, that is visible in the dashboard as its own signal — usually it means the store has added protection that the monitor needs to be allow-listed through.
