Hyvä and Hyvä Checkout: faster storefronts, different failure modes
Hyvä has become the default choice for new Magento frontends because it is so much lighter than Luma. It also changes where things break: many extensions assume Luma’s JavaScript, and the checkout can be Luma, Hyvä Checkout or a third-party one-step checkout.

Compatibility is the main risk
Hyvä drops RequireJS and Knockout, so any extension that ships frontend JavaScript needs a Hyvä compatibility module. Payment and shipping extensions are the critical ones: without a compatible version, a method can simply be missing from the checkout.
Check the Hyvä documentation and your vendors for compatibility before switching, and keep that list current as you add extensions — the same discipline as upgrading Magento safely.
Three possible checkouts
A Hyvä store may still use the Luma checkout through a fallback, use Hyvä Checkout, or use a one-step checkout extension. Each has different markup, different JavaScript and different ways to fail.
Hyvä Checkout renders steps on the server and updates them over requests, so errors often show as a step that will not advance or a component that fails to update rather than a console error.
Monitoring a Hyvä checkout
Do not rely on selectors written for Luma. A monitor needs to understand whichever checkout is in use and still check the result: the right item, a shipping method, correct totals, a payment method ready.
MageSentinel works across Luma, Hyvä Checkout and one-step checkouts without theme-specific setup, so a theme migration does not mean rewriting your checks — it means they tell you whether the migration worked.
Check your own store now with the free Magento checkout test: it walks the checkout in a real browser, Luma or Hyvä, and shows the step where it stops.
Common questions
Is Hyvä Checkout different from the Luma checkout?
Yes. It replaces the Knockout.js checkout with Magewire and Alpine.js components, so extensions and payment methods need Hyvä-compatible versions.
What breaks most often on Hyvä?
Payment and shipping extensions without Hyvä compatibility modules, and checkout customisations ported from Luma.
Can a Hyvä store use the Luma checkout?
Yes. A Hyvä theme can fall back to the Luma checkout, which is a separate path to test.
