A slow checkout is a broken checkout: speeding up Magento checkout
Speed work usually targets the homepage and product pages, because that is where tools point. The checkout is slower by nature — it cannot be cached — and a slow checkout loses customers at the point where they have already decided to buy.

Where the time goes
Checkout time is spent in totals collection, shipping rate requests to carriers, payment scripts loading, address validation and every observer that third-party modules attach to quote saves. Slow external APIs add directly to what the customer waits for — see shipping rates that fail silently.
On the frontend, heavy JavaScript and layout shifts make buttons move under the customer’s thumb. Core Web Vitals apply to the checkout too.
Measure the purchase
Time each step of a real purchase — add to cart, load checkout, choose shipping, reach payment — and track the median and the slow tail over days. A checkout that is fine at 9 a.m. and slow during the evening peak is a capacity problem, not a code problem.
Profile the slow steps: quote collection and shipping estimation are the usual suspects. Remove or defer observers that do not need to run during checkout.
Set a limit and alert on it
Decide how long a checkout step is allowed to take and alert when runs cross it, not only when they fail. A trend of slower runs usually precedes a failure, especially on hosts running out of workers — the same applies to Magento’s PHP-FPM pool.
MageSentinel records the duration of every run and step, and flags checkouts that are slow or visually unstable, so “slow” becomes a signal before it becomes an outage.
Check your own store now with the free Magento checkout test: it walks the checkout in a real browser, Luma or Hyvä, and shows the step where it stops.

Common questions
Why is the Magento checkout slow?
Shipping rate and tax API calls, heavy third-party scripts, too many JavaScript files without bundling, and slow database queries on cart totals.
How do I measure checkout speed?
Time each step of a real purchase, from add to cart to the confirmation page, not only the page load of the checkout.
What is a good checkout time?
Set a limit from your own baseline and alert when a step takes much longer than usual; a sudden rise usually means a slow external call.
