Updating WooCommerce plugins without breaking checkout
A WooCommerce store changes more through plugin updates than through anything its owners write. Most updates are harmless. The ones that are not tend to land on the checkout, because that is where payment, shipping, tax and fields plugins all meet.

Not all updates are equal
Sort your plugins by how close they are to money. Payment gateways, shipping and tax plugins, checkout field editors and anything that caches or combines JavaScript sit directly on the order path. A contact form or a slider does not.
Auto-updates are fine for the second group. For the first, turn them off and update on purpose, a few at a time, at an hour when you can watch the result — not late on a Friday.
Test on a copy first
Keep a staging copy of the store with the same theme and plugins. Update there first and place a real test order: add to cart, apply a coupon, choose shipping, pay with the gateway in test mode.
Read the changelog of the payment plugin before updating it. Major versions often change how the gateway loads on the checkout, especially with the block-based checkout, and a note there can save an evening.
Watch the hour after
After updating production, place one more order yourself, on a phone, as a guest. Then keep an eye on orders for the next hour; a quiet order list right after an update is a signal, not a coincidence.
Keep the previous plugin versions to hand so rolling back is a matter of minutes. A scheduled checkout check that runs through payment turns “something seems off” into a clear alert with the step that failed. Related: upgrading PHP safely and moving to the Checkout block.
Check your own store now with the free WooCommerce checkout checker: it walks the checkout in a real browser and shows the step where it stops.
Common questions
Should I turn on automatic updates for WooCommerce plugins?
For payment, shipping and checkout plugins, update by hand after testing; automatic minor updates are fine for low-risk plugins if you watch the checkout.
How do I test a WooCommerce plugin update?
On a staging copy, update, then place orders with every payment and shipping method before updating production.
How do I roll back a plugin update?
Keep a backup or the previous version zip; WP-CLI can install a specific version with wp plugin install <slug> --version=<x> --force.
